  • Overview: Jet lag hits harder flying east than west, and the fix starts before takeoff. This guide gives a day-by-day plan for shifting your body clock, sleeping on the plane and recovering ...

Jet lag is not just tiredness after a long flight. It is a mismatch between your internal body clock and the local time at your destination, and it affects sleep, appetite, concentration and mood until the two clocks realign. The body clock shifts by roughly 60 to 90 minutes per day, which is why a six-hour time difference can take the better part of a week to shake off completely. Understanding that rate is the key to planning around jet lag instead of simply enduring it.

Direction matters more than most travellers realise. Flying east shortens your day, forcing your body to fall asleep earlier and wake earlier than it wants to, which most people find harder. Flying west lengthens the day, which is generally easier to adapt to. Aviation medicine often summarises this as west is best. A practical consequence is that eastbound trips deserve more preparation: start shifting your sleep schedule earlier by 30 to 60 minutes a day for three days before departure, and use bright morning light to reinforce the shift.

Westbound preparation runs in reverse. Go to bed and wake up later for two to four days before departure, and seek evening light after arrival to hold the delay. Either way, begin the trip well rested. Boarding a long-haul flight already sleep-deprived is the single most common avoidable mistake, and it makes every other strategy work less well. Avoid heavy alcohol the night before flying, since it fragments sleep quality even in small amounts.

On the plane, set your watch and phone to destination time as soon as you board, then eat and sleep on that schedule rather than your departure city's. If it is night at your destination, use an eye mask, earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones, dress in layers, and try to sleep in one solid block. If it is daytime at your destination, stay awake, move around the cabin regularly, and eat at destination meal times to help your digestion sync with the new clock.

Hydration deserves more attention than it usually gets. Cabin humidity sits below 20 percent, far drier than most homes, and dehydration magnifies fatigue, headaches and grogginess. Aim to sip water steadily through the flight rather than drinking large amounts at once, and go easy on alcohol and caffeine, both of which worsen dehydration. Electrolyte drinks or tablets can help on very long sectors, though plain water covers most needs.

After landing, daylight is your strongest reset tool. Get outside in natural morning light on your first day, even if it is overcast, and stay awake until at least 9 pm local time. Short naps are tempting but risky: if you must nap, keep it under 30 minutes and finish before mid-afternoon. A low dose of melatonin taken 30 to 60 minutes before local bedtime for two or three nights can help some travellers, though you should check local regulations and your own health situation first.

For frequent flyers, apps that build a personalised light, sleep and caffeine schedule from your itinerary can take the guesswork out of the plan. Even without an app, the core formula holds: shift gradually before you fly, sleep on destination time during the flight, seek daylight on arrival, and protect your first local bedtime. Follow that sequence and most trips feel manageable by day two instead of dragging into day five.

Recovery is not a race, and comparing your jet lag to a travel companion's is rarely useful, since age, sleep habits and chronotype all change how fast a body clock shifts. Give yourself two full days on a new schedule before judging the trip, protect your sleep ruthlessly on the first night, and remember that the strategies above compound: each one helps a little, and together they usually turn a week of fog into a day or two of mild tiredness.
